#9 fixed The UM dump requests cwang caroline@…
Description

Hi Chang,

I haven't used the UM on hpcx yet, but Christophe says that you have to store all the start dumps and we make a path to your directory. I was looking at your UM start dumps but couldn't find the one I needed. Could you make the start dump for 18/08/2005 at 00Z and 11/08/2005 at 00Z please? If you could do the same for the ECMWF start dump I would be very grateful, but the UM dump is the important one.

Thanks, Caroline

#10 fixed queues for running the UM on HPCx lois D.J.Lunt@…
Description

I am in the process of running my first UM job on hpcx. Things seem to be going ok at the moment (thanks to help from John Hughes here at Bristol), but I am wondering about the queue system.

For a start, I'm not sure about the difference between development, capacity and capability queues. Ultimately, I will be running 32 processors (say) for several months. I realise I will have to resubmit (do you have any scripts which do this automatically? Paul had some for newton but I'm not sure how transferable they are). It looks like the 'development' queue would be best for this, but i don't seem to have access to that (I am running with 'tic' code n02-bas, and asked for 32 processors for 12 hours but it said it couldn't find a suitable queue so I guess that I can't submit to the development queue).

Secondly, do you have an idea what the optimum number of processes for a HadCM3L job is? I have inherited 8*4 (lon*lat) from John Hughes, but was wondering if you have a handle on the 'best' setup.

thanks a lot, Dan

#11 fixed Convert DUMP format to PP format cwang Russo@…
Description

Hi Chang, I've tried ff2pp but it does not work with UM dumps.

I typed: ff2pp $WORKDIR/xahdg/xahdga_da036 ./dump1.pp

and got the following error message: file /hpcx/devt/n02/n02-ncas/emmaria/um_jobs/xahdg/xahdga_da036 is a 64 bit ieee um file ERROR: /hpcx/devt/n02/n02-ncas/emmaria/um_jobs/xahdg/xahdga_da036 is not a UM fieldsfile FIXHD(5) = 1

The fixed header 5 defines the dataset type, and 1 corresponds to a UM dump. I've tried ff2pp on an output pp streams from a UM run which has FIXHD(5)=3 and it works. However the way ff2pp is coded, prevents conversion of UM dumps and ancillaries.

I found that convpp works well to convert ancillaries. It also works with UM dumps, but in this case some of the fields are messed up.

Any idea what's best? Thanks, Maria
