STASH changes for Triffid diagnostics

Reported by: eelsj Owned by: um_support
Component: UM Model Keywords: TRIFFID diagnostics
Cc: Platform: HECToR
UM Version: 6.6.3

Description

I have added 6 diagnostic fields (Triffid diagnostics from STASH section 19)and edited one time profile in a job (XGTEE) that has previously been compiled and run. I checked the availability of the diagnostics and verified them in the UMUI. I have not recompiled the job.

The new diagnostics appear in the outputs but not exactly as specified:

1) The time step used to report diagnostics like vegetation fraction is 10 days into the month and not 15 as specified in the STASH time profile. The frequency of output (monthly) is correct however.

2) The .leave file describes the original STASH set-up for XGTEE i.e. it ignores the 6 new diagnostics and the change to the time profile.

3) For two other jobs (XGTEF and XGTEH) which are linked to the xgtee.exe executable, the .leave files correctly describe the STASH set-up. The diagnostics as still reported at the wrong time in the month (day 10 rather than day 15).

Does the inaccuracy in the .leave file and the apparent reporting at the wrong time step in the month suggest an underlying problem with the STASH changes or can they be trusted? It is not important to me which time step in the month is used for reporting so long as it is consistent.

Thank you.

I suspect that the output timing issue is related to the TRIFFID time step. You have it set to 10 days, but you have asked the model to output at day 15 which is not a TRIFFID time step (the diagnostics are only available at TRIFFID time steps). Output should be available at day 20 - perhaps you could output at days 10 and 20 and interpolate for day 15?

Is there diagnostic output for the xgtee job for which there is no mention of sect 19 diagnostic in the leave file?

TRIFFID time step - day 10 in the month is fine - you've explained why the model is reporting on day 10 rather than day 15 which is what I didn't understand. Thanks.

Diagnostic output for job xgtee

xgtee000.xgtee.d13079.t213722.leave in /home/n02/n02/eelsj/um/umui_out shows xgtee having 150 atmosphere STASH diagnostics, no mention of the 6 diagnostics from section 19. The .leave was written at 02:16 on 21 March. The STASH changes were made around 10:00 on 20 March.

I have just checked the .leave files for the subsequent contination runs (xgtee000.xgtee.d13080.t082841.leave onwards) and they list 156 atmospheric model diagnostics including 6 from section 19! It appears the problem was just in the NRUN .leave file.
