MPAS installation on HECToR

Dear Support,

I do not have an account that I can remember on PUMA.

I am also writing to HECTOR, to ask for assistance, but we
do need but assistance in setting up MPAS.

We are trying to load and run a new piece of code called "MPAS"

Information on this package can be found on
and application can be found on

It is a world leading Numerical weather prediction package
(open source) designed at NCAR, USA, for massively parallel computers.
Up to a 1/3rd of the world have weather forecasts produced by its
predecessor WRF, and MPAS will soon replace it around the world.
It has been recently released, and we have very good contacts and
collaboration with the authors. I can imagine its use could be as large
as the Met Office UM (in the distant future)

We want to run it on Hector.
Currently we have run on a series of machines. It needs (on linux boxes)

mpich2 mpich2-devel yacc bison curl git svn flex libz
libpng jasper jasper-devel

We have tended to compile with mpich2 and gfortran etc, but on hector
we think the cray compiler would be better. We need pnetcdf
and netcdf (in modules already), but we would like "pio" loaded

"pio" is a parallel io package that is becoming widely used.

One can download the code with

svn export

  1. Could you make pio available as a module please? We need pnetcdf ,

netcdf , pio and the code all compiled with the same compiler and version.
Thus it would be much easier if we could have this compiled as a module on
Hector. We have found it takes about 2 minutes to load and set up the
software, but it does need to be the same compiler version as the code,
netcdf, pnetcdf etc. which could be an issue.

  1. If this is not possible, could you provide any advice please on the

standard compilers. We used mpif77 , mpif90, etc. which are the parallel
compilers derived for gnu. Could you tell me if these are all available
via the ftn compiler (I am assuming they are)

  1. If we wanted to ask you to load MPAS as a module, what do we need to

do? Setting up MPAS takes about 1-2 hours with compilation

  1. Another alternative is that we just load the gnu compiler, jasper,

libpng, netcdf etc etc. in our file space. I imagine that might not be a
good way to go, but would there be any objections if we did that?

Thanks in advance
