UM FCM Tutorial - home directory mismatch

Reported by: Leighton_Regayre Owned by: um_support
Component: ARCHER Keywords:
Cc: Platform: PUMA
UM Version: 8.2

Description

I am attempting to complete the UM FCM Tutorial.
My home directory on Archer is a temporary one set up for UKCA training:
/nerc/n02/n02/lre

When submitting a pre-made job as directed by the Tutorial, the umui looks for .profile (line 29 of the SUBMIT file) in the wrong directory:
/home/n02/n02/lre
which does not exist.

I can't see within the umui where to alter this path.

Your home directory on ARCHER is /home/n02/n02/lre - I can see that it exists. There should be no reason to use /nerc for the FCM tutorial.

You will be in your home space when you login to ARCHER (type pwd at the ARCHER command line to see where you are).

Hi Leighton,

Can you also go to UMUI window:

Input/Output control & resources → User hand-edit files and make sure the hand-edit listed in the table is

~grenville/umui_jobs/hand_edits/short-job

and not 4Dec-reservation.

Regards,
Ros.

Hi Grenville,

When I type pwd on the ARCHER command line it returns:

/nerc/n02/n02/lre

The error I get in submitting a job using the umui is because
/home/n02/n02/lre/.profile cannot be found.

I can edit /nerc/n02/n02/lre/.profile

but cannot see the folder /home/n02/n02/lre

ls /home/n02/n02/lre returns the error message:
'No such file or directory'

Hi Ros,

I've changed the hand_edits as you recommended.

The umui error persists:

Your job directory on host login.archer.ac.uk is: /home/n02/n02/lre/umui_runs/xkwax-351143429

umui_runs/xkwax-351143429/SUBMIT[29]: .: /home/n02/n02/lre/.profile: cannot open [No such file or directory]

Leighton

Please log out of ARCHER. Login again and then type pwd - let us know what you get.

Hi Grenville,

I've logged out and back in. I get this warning upon login:

work/n02/n02/hum/vn8.2/cce/scripts/.umsetvars_8.2: No such file or directory

and pwd returns
/nerc/n02/n02/lre

I need to have permission to see your files; can you type this as the archer command line

chmod -R g+rX /home/n02/n02/lre
chmod -R g+rX /work/n02/n02/lre
chmod -R g+rX /nerc/n02/n02/lre

Hi Grenville,

That's done. Note that the first two commands failed because I cannot see these folders.

I am currently logged in as user 'lre' set up for my participation in the UKCA training on January 5th-9th. Is this part of the problem?

Dear Leighton,

Just to clarify, the lre account on ARCHER was set-up so you could complete the FCM tutorials prior to arriving in Cambridge. During the UKCA training you will be using NCAS training accounts so that you can make use of a reserved queue.

Thanks,
Luke

Leighton

Exactly what are you typing to login to ARCHER?

comment:11 Changed 5 years ago by Leighton_Regayre

ssh -l lre dtn01.rdf.ac.uk

comment:12 Changed 5 years ago by grenville

Leighton

Huh? - that only gives you access to the RDF - the FCM tutorial makes no mention of this and does specifically refer to login.archer.ac.uk.

Please do this

ssh -l lre login.archer.ac.uk

Grenville,

That was the problem. Thanks for taking the time to figure it out.
