we are finding that our setup/debug cycle for UM jobs on ARCHER is very slow at present (both for myself on CSSP and for Oliver on his TITAN work). We find that it does not matter when we submit a job during the day to ARCHER, it will not start running until some point during the night. In Oliver's case a job he submitted yesterday has still not yet run. I have only been trying to use ARCHER for the past month, but Oliver has longer experience on it and has remarked to me that it did not used to be like this. Have we perhaps both missed something in our jobs? A flag or some change of variable name / configuration etc.?

Are you able to use the short queue?

Hello Grenville,

at the moment I am in the standard queue. I have changed my job lengths to be 20minutes but they still go into the standard queue. I've seen here..

that "qsub -q short" gets my jobs into the short queue, but I do not know where in the UMUI I should select that option?

It's not set in the UMUI. You need hand edit (or you can edit the pbs file direclty)

Please see /home/grenville/umui_jobs/hand_edits/short-job — you may need to modify this a little to work with you um version.

in the "UMUI —> Input / Output Control and Resources —> User hand edit files"

add that path and remember to include the 'Y' in the "Include Y/N" column. We've already checked that your job is asking for 20minutes or less, so you'll be fine on that front.

( That queue only runs 10am — 5pm, Mon—Fri. Also, according to the archer status page it will be working on a reduced nos of nodes for another few days yet. )

I've tested it on a different job of mine (xinig), and it gets into the right queue, and runs.

submitted jobs are running within a few minutes, which is a major improvement, so thanks for that!

although I'm requesting the 'short' queue, I'm ending up in a queue labelled "S2721565". I note that there seem to be a few other people in this queue, but in the "short" queue I only seem Ros - perhaps that's coincidence. Does it matter which we're in?

The short queue is not really a queue - it is a special kind of reservation (S2721565 is a typical reservation number). If the queue is busy, you may see yourself in "short", when you're running you will see S2721565 or something like it.

Contact ARCHER for the gory details.

The only problem with the short queue is that it only runs from 10-5 — we should push for 24 hr access I think.
