Running UM interactively on Archer

Reported by: simon.tett Owned by: um_support
Component: UM Model Keywords: debugging, interactive
Cc: Platform: ARCHER
UM Version: 8.3

Description

Is there any guidance on how to run the UM interactively on Archer to take advantage of the faster run/debug cycle that is possible. http://www.archer.ac.uk/documentation/user-guide/batch.php#sec-5.4.8 says you need to do aprun. But the UM hides the aprun somewhere…

I guess some thing that says what you need to do to compile, reconfigure and run is what is needed. Can assume the model has been run once so compiled most of the code, reconfigured once and ran once.

Once you have an interactive session, you should be able to run the umuisubmit_run script (this lives in your umui_runs directory under a subdirectory associated with your job - with a name something like xabcd-012345678) at the command line. This will set up the appropriate environment and call aprun.

You may queue quite a while before you are assigned an interactive session.

Have you run in the short queue - we have seen good turn around for development jobs in this queue.

Hi Grenville,

yes I know about the short Q — I'm just trying to speed up things…

What I've found with interactive multi-node jobs is that compilation needs to happen on login in node as cray compiler not available. I think that requires pushing over any changes you have from puma to archer. (or just working on archer and pushing data back to puma when done).
