Creating general ancillaries

I am currently trying to set up my model to run for 60 years, however a few of the ancillary files specifically classic aerosols (e.g.sulphur dioxide) run between 1970-2010 which causes my model to crash at this point meaning I cannot run the full 60 years.

I have tried to create the ancillaries as climatologies for the time period I have set other ancillaries to (1979-1989). I have managed to create some ancillaries through this however two files - biomass emissions and sulphur emissions have two parameters of similar names e.g. in sulphur emissions, one named sulphur dioxide emissions and the other high level SO2 emissions (similar situation for biomass - one name surf and the other HI). They have the same field name so when I try to convert them to xancil using the general ancillary tab, the subsequent file which is created has these two parameters under one name meaning that I have 24 timesteps rather than 12, and two files as one.

Is there any way that I can get around this and stop the two files from being created as one.

Hi Michelle

This should work as the field names have nothing to do with how the files are created so I'm not sure what you have done wrong. If you get the the STASH codes correct it should work. If you need some more help let me know where your input/output files are so I can see what you are doing.

Hi Jeff,

When I select the variable name from NetCDF file, under generalised ancillary file tab, (for sulphur dioxide emissions and high level SO2) it outputs the STASH code for me and for these two fields, the STASH code and PP code is the same. I am not sure what I am doing wrong or how I can change the STASH/get correct STASH code.

Yes if you want to have a look, the ancillary files are in my work directory (/work/n02/n02/michmcr/data/ancil_files) and the two files which I am trying to create as ancillary files are and

Hi Michelle

When you select the netCDF variable xancil tries to work out the correct parameters but it won't always have enough information to do this correctly, so you should always check this and correct any errors.

In your case it can work out the PP code from the netCDF information but as you found out this value is the same for two of your input fields, so only one of the STASH codes is correct. The easiest way to find the correct STASH code is to look at file

and search for the name of your field.

1| 1 | 0 | 126 |HIGH LEVEL SO2 EMISSIONS KG/M2/S |

The correct STASH code to use is 126.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks very much. I have got this working now for the two files that I was having problems with.

Many thanks
