Model output on different grids

Description

Hi,

May I ask a few questions about UM output options?

1) Is it possible to make the output on the unrotated pole grid?
2) Are the horizontal wind components (u,v) being written relative to the "real" North Pole location or relative to the rotated pole?
3) Is it possible to write u- and v-wind fields on the geometric height levels AND in the same grid points horizontally? Or the only option for z-levels is the staggered grid of the model? And in general, can I write all fields to the same unstaggered in space grid points?

Thanks,
Denis

1) Is it possible to make the output on the unrotated pole grid?

you'd do this as a post processing operation

2) Are the horizontal wind components (u,v) being written relative to the "real" North Pole location or relative to the rotated pole?

fields are written out on the rotated coordinates

3) u and v are on different grids - you'd need to interpolate (in general too)

Hi Grenville,

Thank you for the reply. Are there any standard utilities on ARCHER/MONSooN to do the rotation and interpolation?

Please look at http://cms.ncas.ac.uk/documents/IDL/idl_guide.html - this has a multitude of processing options.

This isn't available on ARCHER (there is no IDL licence), but you may have one locally.
