Very slow and screen freezing when ssh'ing to ARCHER

Description

For the past few days I've had very slow access to ARCHER and it has provided erratic response times. My screen often freezes and I occasionally have to wait several minutes to access the command line again. Opening the emacs text editor isn't an option as this freezes every time.

I was hoping this was a temporary issue. Perhaps it's something in my profile causing the problem?

This is an ARCHER problem - I'm experiencing this too and I've reported it.

Please report this to ARCHER and consult with your local IT.

I had very poor response at ARCHER on Monday but haven't noticed a problem since then. Graham has seen similar problems since Sat. Archer couldn't see a problem then.

Are you logging in to archer from PUMA?

Do you see the problem from all machines.

Do you see it on particular archer login node? (login001 for example here lre@eslogin001)

I'm logging into ARCHER from PUMA.

Hi Leighton,

I'm running some traceroute tests from Puma and our local system to see if there's an issue from Puma. I'll get back to you when I find out if there's anything strange happening.

In the meantime if you ssh direct from your Linux box to Archer do you see the same slowness and screen freezing?

Hi Leighton,

There's been no response yet from our IT department about the issues we seem to be having with the Reading University firewall. I've prompted them and hope to get a response soon.

The JANET engineers have identified a network issue and put a fix in place. Please let us know if you see any further network stalling between PUMA and ARCHER.
