UNRECOVERABLE library error with radiative forcing

Reported by: pmcjs Owned by: um_support

Description

Dear CMS,

I am trying to obtain radiative forcing estimates using the double-call method from HadGEM3-A for various species, starting with greenhouse gases.

I am getting the following output in the xmiky000.xmiky.d16021.t151616.leave file when I run job xmiky (this is a copy of xleha which is a HadGEM3-A job from a UM training course).

lib-4211 : UNRECOVERABLE library error
A WRITE operation tried to write a record that was too long.

 an internal file (character variable)

and so on for about 500 lines.

This happens when "Diagnose radiative forcings" is selected in Model Selection > Atmosphere > Scientific parameters and sections > section by section choices > sections 1 and 2. The error occurs whether or not the appropriate STASH items (1-4xx and 2-4xx) are selected.

The only things I have changed from xleha are the radiation scheme for radiative forcing by CO2, the times per day of the radiation call (24 → 8), and added one STASH item to get TOA SW radiative forcing (1-408).

It's quite possible that copying a training course job is a bad idea and there is a better job I can start from - if this is the case please advise.

Many thanks,
Chris

Well, it seems like this problem is specific to vn8.2. I have managed to get the radiative forcing diagnostic working by copying a standard vn8.4 job (xjeyf) and following the instructions on the UKCA tutorial. Issue resolved.
