um8.4 with UKCA job not producing output

Reported by: s.mangeon Owned by: luke
Priority: normal Component: UM Model
Keywords: UKCA, nudging Cc:
Platform: MONSooN UM Version: 8.4

I am currently attempting to run a configuration for um8.4 with UKCA for the cray. I have done changes from the initially copied UKCA release job in order to include nudging and to start the run from 1996 (december 1995 in effect). I should note we are planning to use it as a 'standard' job so there are a lot of output variables (inc down to 3-hourly).

The name of the job is xmega

I had a series of problems relating to running on the cray (I included the metocray branch advised to Sunil Varma) and included the UM build script.

It now seems from the .leave file that the run is started - although it doesn't appear to produce outputs, nor has it populated the… or xmegaa.pb… files in /projects/ukca-imp/smange/xmega .

Going through the leave file (and the pe_output files) it seems the main error raised is the following:

Im_ident,Sec,Item: 1 34 50

What surprises me is that this particular item is not one of my required STASH diagnostics, nor is it in the prognostics list.

Is this an issue you've witnessed before?

Hi Stephane,

You should note that there are issues with nudging which will need to be corrected prior to your running, although this shouldn't affect this issue.

Item 34050 is normally HCl, but in the CheST configuration this is replaced with a lumped Cl tracer at 34100, so it shouldn't be on.

Also, there are some updates related to wet scavenging of aerosols that I need to apply, which you might need prior to running.

I'll get back to you.

Hi Luke,

Any news on this?

Hi Stephane,

Mohit has done some limited testing with Simon Wilson's branch

fcm:um_br/dev/simon/vn8.4_nudging_tropopause_fix/src @20711

Which does bit compare, and so I would suggest you could look at using this. I plan to merge it into the UKCA package branch with a bit more testing.

I am still testing the scavenging fixes, and will merge that into the package branch when I am happy that I have everything correctly.

Dear Stephane,

Is this still an issue for you?
