Gregorian calendar run does not produce monthly mean files / no archiving to MASS

Reported by: marcus Owned by: um_support
Component: UM Model Keywords: nudging, Gregorian calendar, monthly mean
Cc: Platform: MONSooN
UM Version: 10.4

This query refers to MONSooN suite puma-aa356. Afer converting to Gregorian calendar the model runs fine but it does not produce monthly mean files (** files).

Also, archiving to MASS no longer works which might be an unrelated problem.

I created this suite by copying the corresponding 360d-calendar (non-nudged) suite puma-aa342, which ran without problems, and applied the following changes in Rose:

  • suite conf > Model Configuration : Calendar – set to Gregorian
  • fcm_make_um > Sources: include “branches/dev/mohitdalvi/vn10.4_ncdf_update_tmp_fix@24351”
  • um > namelist > Top Level Model Control > Run Control and Time Settings: lclimrealyr = true, lcal360 = false
  • um > namelist > Model Input and Output > Dumping and Meaning : greg_monthly_dump = true
  • um > namelist > Model Input and Output > Dumping and Meaning : meanfreqim set to 30,3,4,0 (this causes an error)
  • in SUITE_DIR/app/install_ancil/rose-app.conf change in section [file:$ROSE_DATA/etc/um_ancils_gl]: source=(set to source path)
  • um > namelist > Model Input and Output > STASH Requests and Profiles > STASH Requests : include diagnostic 30-451
  • um > namelist > UM Science Settings > Section 39 – Nudging: set to true and make appropriate choices.

Could you please have a look at my configuration and help me figure out what causes the above problems.

Many thanks,

This would on MONSooN in
/home/makoe/cylc-run/puma-aa356 and then it depends what you want to look at.
share - model data
log - log output
work - pe output

Right click on the red circle (indicating an error) next to meanfreqim and click auto-fix Error. Then right click on ppselectim, and check the Help info. With the Gregorian calendar set, meaning periods are fixed apparently (I've never run like this). Set entries as explained in the help. Try that — it's not clear if you need to set a particular dump frequency - it doesn't complain with 10 day dumps. Let us know if if this works.

Hi Grenville,
I have followed the instructions above but no difference. The model does not produce not any monthly mean files (perhaps they are written to a different stream?) and the files are not correctly copied to MASS (moose:/crum/puma-aa356).
What else could I try?

We're looking at this.

The leave file says that no means have been requsted - the number of means requested is calculated in initmean.F90, it simply counts the number if non zero entries in meanfreqim. But the Rose suite makes the following entry in the nlstcall namelist (in /home/gmslis/roses/puma-aa356/app/um/opt/rose-app-gregorian.conf)

and the number of means evaluated to 0.

I changed this entry by directly editing the namelist to

and the model started to create meaning files, but ran for 2057 time steps and exceeded the MONSooN wallclock allocated. It will run slower because it needs to do daily dumping.

I am rerunning with a longer wallclock time to see if it completes. MONSooN has been quite slow.

That worked - see /home/gmslis/cylc-run/puma-aa356/share/data/History_Data for the monthly climate meaning files aa356a.pm1988dec aa356a.pm1988nov aa356a.pm1988oct aa356a.pm1988sep aa356a.pm1989jan, and the 3-month means aa356a.ps1988son.

Hi Grenville,
Many thanks, I haven't been able to check the files yet as I am away on leave but according to the log files monthly mean pm files are now created. I think these were the settings I needed.
