how to get the UM

Dear helpdesk

I'd like to be able to provide instructions for a user abroad who is interested in FAMOUS about how to obtain the UM. I have found the link on the NCAS-CMS site to the terms and conditions. Where should I point the user for instructions on how to sign the licence or request or obtain a copy of the software for UM 4.5?

Hello Jonathan,

It would be so good if we could offer general advice to all potential UM users as to obtaining code and signing licences. We are still awaiting clear guidance from the Met Office and have been for some years. We have no mechanism for managing the UM licence as there does not seem to be general agreement of how this is going to be handled. NERC seems to be negotiating under the JCRP, The Met Office seems to dealing with Universities, especially with respect to UKCA developpers. How the Met Office handle UM academic UM users from abroad possibly hasn't even been thought about. Collaboration agreements with other Met/Climate? centres is being handled by the Met Office collaboration team.

So the answer is there are no instructions and we have no idea of when there may be some.

Well, this seems to be depressing and frustrating. Shall I ask the Met Office what is the correct route for academics abroad to obtain the software and licence for 4.5? I imagine the portable UM is available in principle (though without support from the Met Office). As for the UK academic community, my understanding is that the Met Office is negotiating through the JCRP as well; for instance IPR has been negotiated under the JCRP.
