Can't submit a job

Reported by: feturner Owned by: ros
Priority: normal Component: PUMA
Keywords: Cc:
Platform: UM Version: 4.5

Description

I keep getting permission denied when I try to submit a job on Archer - I think there's something wrong with the password. It works when I log on via a terminal, but won't work when I submit.

My user i.d. is fturner, and the job is xnfhb.

Hi Fiona,

Can you please give us the full output including error message that you get when you try and submit the job? The UMUI looks like it has successfully managed to copy over the job files to ~fturner/umui_runs on ARCHER these are date stamped "Feb 23 14:05".

Regards,
Ros.

Hi Ros,

Apologies for the delay in response, I didn't get an email when you commented on this ticket so had to manually search for it when I received the email about #2093.

When I submit the job, it simply says "ERROR: login.archer.ac.uk : Permission denied"

Thanks,
Fiona

Hi Fiona,

Since the UMUI is successfully managing to copy over the job files, I suspect that you have some special character in your ARCHER password which is causing problems with the way the UMUI temporarily holds your password for the subsequent ssh. I would suggest either changing your ARCHER password or setting up ssh-agent (this will allow submission to ARCHER without it prompting for password) Details for setting up ssh-agent are available here see sections 2.7 & 2.8: Setting up ssh-agent

I tried submitting you job and it's set up fine.

Cheers,
Ros.

Hi Ros,

I've tried both of the things you suggested and I still can't submit. My password doesn't have any unusual characters in it anymore, and I've set up an ssh-agent. What else could it be?

Thanks,
Fiona

Fiona

Please confirm that from the PUMA command line that you can ssh to ARCHER without typing a pass phrase.

Copy and paste the ssh command you typed and the response text.

Please also send screen shots of the umui windows that pop up when you process and submit the job

Hi Grenville,

Yes I can ssh to Archer without typing a pass phrase. The command and repsonse text are:

feturner@puma:/home/feturner> eval ssh-agent -s
Agent pid 27150
feturner@puma:/home/feturner> ssh-add
Enter passphrase for /home/feturner/.ssh/id_rsa:
Bad passphrase, try again for /home/feturner/.ssh/id_rsa:
Identity added: /home/feturner/.ssh/id_rsa (/home/feturner/.ssh/id_rsa)
feturner@puma:/home/feturner> ssh fturner@…

Fiona

The "Permission denied" error fooled us — you're not denied access to ARCHER, just to /work/n02/n02/hum/bin/loadcomp. It appears that you don't have access to /work/y07/y07/umshared (please try to cd to that directory to check). To get access

(Go to https://www.archer.ac.uk/safe/

click on “login accounts” in the black bar at the top and select your ARCHER username

click new package group request

select umshared (it may be called UM or Met Office (it'll be clear when you get there) from the drop-down menu and click select package group)

Please do not do this "eval ssh-agent -s " it is known to cause problems. We suggest that you copy /home/um/um-training/setup/.profile as your .profile. You will also need to copy /home/um/um-training/setup/ssh-setup to your $HOME/.ssh directory.

The use ssh-add on PUMA to add your key to the agent.
