Insufficient space for LOOKUP headers

Reported by: marcus Owned by: um_support
Component: UM Model Keywords: Ancillary files, SST
Cc: Platform: NEXCS
UM Version: 10.6

Description

Hi,

When including the new SSTs in suite u-am585 I get an error about insufficient space for LOOKUP headers. In the Rose menu tab 'Ancil options' the value for nancil_lookupsa is set to 50,000. The help text indicates this as the maximum value of the valid range for this number.

The number of time steps in our 1948-2015 SST file is 24,480. I presume that there is one header per time step? But then this number is significantly smaller than the upper limit of 50,000. Please can you help me with this.

Many thanks,
Marcus

I noted that there are similar tickets #690 and #1862 but I cannot find therein a solution that would be applicable to this problem.

Best,

Can I please ask if anyone has come across this problem before? Unfortunately I am still stuck with this. Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Marcus

Hi Marcus

The value of nancil_lookupsa applies to all of the updated ancillaries added together, so you also have, for example, 2 ice fields to add to this which I assume have the same number of time records. So you will need way more than 50000 headers, maybe a better number to try is 100000. Have you tried using a larger value for nancil_lookupsa and ignoring the rose error?

If you wanted to do it properly you would have to change the um app metadata, if you look at your suite in rose edit and click on um you can see the metadata is coming from /projects/ukca-admin/meta/ACSIS/v1. So you could take a copy of this directory and edit rose-app.conf to increase the maximum value of nancil_lookupsa, then edit your job to point to this new location for the metadata.

Jeff.

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for letting me know. For some reason I seemed to think it wouldn't let me set it above 50,000 but it did work and that has sorted the problem now.

I didn't know that the netcdf UKCA emissions also counted towards the ancillary headers, and as all fields are time-varying for 60 years it is naturally a much larger number of headers.

Many thanks,
Marcus
