request for ancillary files

Hi

I have a stupid question, where can I find appropriate ancillary file for my suite? I'm currently running a UKCA Gregorian calendar suite at N96 with UM10.6. I'm trying to simulate from 20160101-20170930 and compare model results with the measurement. But the model stopped with an error in SSTs ancillary first, I think there may be more errors since I don't have ancillary files including this period. So, would anyone please help me to find the ancillary files? or how to make a one?

Hi Haochi,

There are lots of ancillary files in $UMDIR/ancil/atmos. The ones you want depend on whether you're doing a standard global or regional run, or whether you need a custom domain in which case you need to create your own. What's the suite id?

Yes, I've looked this directory, but didn't find any Gregorian ancillary files covering period 2015-2017.

Hi Haochi,

The SMC/Snow climatology, for example, is in /projects/um1/ancil/atmos/n320/smc_snow/gwsp2_hwsd_vg/v4/qrclim.smow. It has a Gregorian calendar.

What ancillaries are you looking for?

Hi Willie

Sorry, I think I didn't say it clearly, I need ancillary files which cover the date from 20150901 to 20170830. Because I'm trying to compare the model with field measurement, so the time serious data would be more appropriate. The data in /projects/um1/ancil/atmos/ directory are either period mean data or doesn't including 20150901 to 20170830. So I was wondering where can I get them.

Currently, I'm looking for SST and sea-ice fraction, sea-ice depth ancillary data…

Hi Haochi,

My understanding here is not great, but these files are used within the Met Office weather forecast models, so they are 'up to date' and the monthly means can be construed to cover the period you're interested in.

If these are not sufficient for your needs then you'll need to create your own.

Sorry, I'm a little confused, could you please give me more details about which period of these climates mean ancillary data would cover, how could I know the monthly mean data represent which periods months? Do you have some documents for these files?

And for the create my own, do we have any tools to do that?

Hi Haochi,

I think the ancillaries used are connected with the model version and resolution, in this case N96. This is no longer a current weather forecasting resolution at the Met Office, so the ancillaries are quite old.

So it looks like you would have to create your own using the Central Ancillary Program - see https://code.metoffice.gov.uk/doc/ancil/ancil9.1/index.html#creating-ancillary-files on the Met Office Science Repository Service.

If you look at the SST and sea ice section https://code.metoffice.gov.uk/doc/ancil/ancil9.1/ASDP/ASDP04.html it seems to suggest that the source data is limited to 1961-1990.

You may have to discuss this further with Keir Bovis at the Met Office.
