Problem with .astart file output

Description

Hi, I have been running the UM6.1 reconfiguration at 4km and am having problems with the output .astart file. (The job is xdsv:m)

The .astart file produced has some odd points in it. For example, looking at the uwind and vwind in xconv, on the left hand side of the plot there are several pixels which have strange values.

The file can be found here:/work/n02/n02/eebaw/xdsvm

Do you know what could be causing this?

The .leave file has an error in it (Error 11 - reached end of atmosphere LBC file), but I don't think this is what is causing the problem, since I have set my run length to be compatible with the length of the LBCs.

Thanks,
Bethan.

Hi Bethan,

You are right: doing a reconfiguration only run shows that the reconfigured start dump has corrupt values in it. I notice that the original start dump has a slightly different LAM from the model LAM and this may be the source of the problem. I will continue to look at this.

Willie

Hi Willie,

I can't see that the model LAM and startdump LAM are different. I am looking at the "theta after timestep" Field 2 in xconv, and the Trans values appear to be the same as those set for the model in the umui.

However, the U component of the wind (Field 0) has a slightly different LAM - due to the way the variables are evaluated on the grid? Have I used the wrong field from the startdump to take the LAM from, perhaps?

Thanks,
Bethan.

Hi Bethan,

Humphrey and I have worked out a solution for you. Humphrey stressed that it is not necessary to reconfigure the start dump. We started from a job created by Humphrey and ported it to HECToR. To get this you need to do the following,

  1. Select user willie in the UMUI - the job is xdwoc,
  1. Copy the files ancil.tar and spectral.tar from my work directory /work/n02/n02/willie and unpack them in your work directory,
  1. Within your copy of the job, change UM_SPECTRAL and MY_ANCIL to point to these,
  1. It should now all work!

If you have any further problems with this, please let me know.

Regards,

Willie
