Vegetation fraction ancillary file

Was hoping one of you could help with a question regarding the vegetation fraction ancillary file used by the UM (specifically GC3.1 N96 ORCA1 UM10.7 NEMO3.6)? The question is in 2 parts.

As you know, the vegetation fraction ancillary file (qrparm.veg.frac) contains 9 different tiles, but all of these have only one timeslice (presumably an annual mean).

Firstly, therefore, do you know if a monthly climatology version of this exists, i.e. the same file but 12 timeslices? If so, could you point me to its location on either Archer or Monsoon?

Secondly, if such a thing does exist, can you advise what would need to be changed within the model, in order to read this in at the monthly timescale rather than just one value? I believe there used to be a simple switch within the old-fashioned UMUI, but how would one go about doing this using the new Rose/Cylc? architecture?

I have also asked this question to the land surface group here, as I realise it bridges the gap between a science question (which you probably can't help with) and a technical question (which you can).

Many thanks,

Just to say I think I have solved this question myself. Within Rose, I went to um > namelist > Reconfiguration and ancillary control > Configure ancils, then selected the relevant ancillary file, then set update_anc to .true. and the period to Months. I haven't actually tried running with this yet (I'm about to do that now), but this appears to be the right place at least, unless I am missing something?

PS. I don't close this ticket just yet, until I have successfully tested running the model with updating switched on and using an appropriate ancillary file?

Hi again,

Sorry to come back to this, but it doesn't seem to be as simple as I first thought. The above comment is correct for certain suites, such as the one I looked at to get the above answer (u-aw739).

However, I am now wanting to actually try this, using an appropriate 12 monthly climatology vegetation fraction ancillary file that I have created, but my suite doesn't appear to have the vegetation fraction listed. My suite is u-ay584, but if I go to um > namelist > Reconfiguration and ancillary control > Configure ancils then the vegetation fraction isn't listed. In fact many of them are not listed. Therefore I can't go into it to change the updating.

Please would you advise where this listed is in the suite, if not here?
