Description

Can you get running on MONSooN the u-an979 suite for land surface modeling of an exoplanet?
Can you switch in a land surface and start playing with an easy way to setup flexible, idealised continents, and deal with the water cycle so that we can have pools and lakes?

The suite runs on MONSooN now. Still woriking on step#2.

I have now switched in a land surface, as desired in step #2.

DETAILS:
The new thing I have done is followed the steps that Ian told me about in /home/d03/frib/ideal_land . This is running on MONSooN now as u-az020, and in a few hours we'll hopefully have land-only output to compare to the all-tiles version from u-an979 (my copy of u-an979 is u-aw657). This step has been done before by Ian et al., so this is mostly a check to see if things are working for me or not.

After some debugging with Ian Boutle, suite u-az020 works now for modeling a planet with just the bare soil land surface and no oceans (or vegetation). The changes outlined in /home/d03/frib/ideal_land can also be enabled by the OPTION='land' statement in the conf file alone. We also made a couple of other changes.

Neil Lewis has provided me some instructions for how to modify the Fortran code of the UM so that continents can be turned on or off.

Simon Wilson has given me some advice about how to work with land masks with the UM code. I have also been tutored by Benoit Vanniere about how to use xancil to convert a NETCDF land mask to a UM fields land mask.

The land masks now work.
I got further help from Jeff Cole about this. He's the author of xancil.
One next step is to integrate automatic ancil creation into the Proxima Centauri b Exoplanet suite u-az020.

I have also used UM ancil land mask files for creating a northern ocean for the Early-Mars suite u-bb774, running on Monsoon.

I also modified this suite to be able to run current Mars on Monsoon.

For the Mars version of the suite (u-bb774), can you:

1) add dust aerosols for current Mars;
2) add topography (start with idealized topography);
3) improve the radiative transport for early Mars (including SO2);
4) add soil-moisture variables to the output?

For the post-processing of this suite's data, can you improve your Python plots, especially getting the same time axes for the multiple plots?
