Start dump dates and ancillary file resolution

Reported by: laurahb Owned by: willie

UM Version: 10.3

I have a couple of questions about start-dumps and ancillary files:

  • I want to override the date associated with the start dump I'm using (I'm running a spin-up so the data at the start doesn't matter too much). I've found this instruction in the UM training slides:

To reset the date in the file with reconfiguration, set:
but I can't find this anywhere so can't work out where to set it.

  • I've made my own ancillary files for SST and sea-ice using xancil but they are a different grid resolution from the model run. Can the UM cope with this (i.e. reconfigure them within the run) or do they need to be the same grid to start with? If they need to be the same, what is the best way to do this?

Hi Laura,

What suite id and computer is this?

You can search for i_override_date_time in Rose edit.

The ancillary files need to be on the same grid as the model. You can generate ancillaries using the CAP.

Hi Willie,

It's u-ay059, running on Archer.
I've tried searching for i_override_date_time but it's not coming up with anything.

I will have a look at the CAP, thanks - I used xancil to generate the ancillaries but it has no option to regrid.

Hi again,

I've had a look at the CAP documentation but I can't work out how to regrid the data (and am generally a bit lost as to exactly how to use it!).

Following on from this, I've now managed to sort out my ancil files using CDO (to regrid the original nc files).

So the only thing I need help with now is the start dump time issue.

  • Platform set to ARCHER
  • UM Version set to 10.3

Hi Laura,

That's great. There seems to be no such variable as i_override_date_time - I think this must refer to a different version of the model.

I think all you need to do is to set the model basis time (Initialisation and Cycling) to be the same as the start dump and it should work.
