Grid co-location and regridding of UM diagnostic variables

Description

I have some UM data which I wish to plot, and am currently trying to re-grid the variables before I do so. I understand that each of the prognostic variables is co-located with the one of the primary variables. However, I cannot find any information in the UM documentation (paper no. 15) as to the co-location of the diagnostic variables (such as orography, boundary layer depth etc). Do these have a common location?

Also, is there a standard way to re-grid the variables? I have been attempting to re-grid everything onto the Exner grid, but this may not be the best approach.

Thanks,
Bethan.

Hi Bethan,

There is a Um 4.5 document S1 that discusses grids - see http://ncas-cms.nerc.ac.uk/component/option,com_docman/task,cat_view/gid,40/dir,ASC/order,name/limit,10/limitstart,20/

If this doesn't have what you want, let me know and I'll seek further advice.

Willie

Hi Willie,

The document above doesn't mention anything about diagnostic variables. I have read section 4 of the documentation paper 15 (Joy of UM 6.1 - Model Formulation), which discusses the staggered grid in detail. However, I can't find anything there about the grid co-location of diagnostic variables either.

Thanks,
Bethan.

Hi Bethan,

Have a look at http://ncas-cms.nerc.ac.uk/content/view/1365/232/ - this is the NDdiag program. It processes UM files and creates all sorts of diagnostics. It may be what you want.

Regards,

Willie
