Creating soil dust ancillary using xancil

Description

NOTE: THIS WAS SENT VIA DIRECT EMAIL TO JEFF C AND HAS ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED (SEE BELOW), BUT IS JUST POSTED HERE FOR POSTERITY.

Hi Jeff,

Sorry to bother you, but I'm having trouble using xancil to create 2 soil ancillary files, namely the soil parameters and soil dust fields.

The first (soil parameters) works fine, although I have to do it as a generalised ancillary file rather than the actual soil parameters option as otherwise it misses out one of the fields.

However the 2nd (soil dust) doesn't work. Or at least it works, but not correctly. Again, I am using the generalised ancillary file option, because there doesn't appear to be a soil dust choice. I have read in the file and selected all the fields, but the "dust soil mass fraction division 1-6" all have the same stash code and PP code when I select them. The only thing which is different is the variable name. This means that, when I run xancil, rather than creating 6 separate fields (one for each division, as it should), it creates one field with 6 levels. How can I change this so that I end up with 6 separate fields?

I am doing all of this on NEXCS, at /home/d05/cwilliams/gc31/ancils/soil_dust/hwsd. The .nc file (which is a modified version of the original qrparm.soil.dust_orig, which is UM version 9.1), I am trying to convert is qrparm.soil.dust.nc and my xancil job is soil_d1.job

Please can you advise?

Many thanks,

Charlie

JEFF'S RESPONSE.

Hi Charlie

For each Dust soil mass fraction div field you need to change the STASH
code to the correct number, so click on each name and change the STASH
code, i.e.

Dust soil mass fraction div n has STASH code 420+n

Each time you change the STASH code click on the Update button to the
right, this should change the the STASH name to the correct name.

You also need to make sure you have the correct variable name for each
field. To do this click the select button and double click on the
correct STASH name, this should change the variable name. There seems to
be a bug in xancil where if you click on the Ok button in the select
window it resets the variable name back to its original value every
second time. To work around this problem click on the top right X button
to close the window.

After you have created the ancil file check carefully to make sure all
the fields are correct.

It probably would be better to submit this query as a ticket next time,
then anyone who has a similar problem can search the helpdesk and find
this answer.

Jeff.
