HadCM3 4.5 on HECToR

Reported by: mjm Owned by: um_support

UM Version: 4.5

Description

Hello

We might in some circumstances find that we need to use HECToR, as an alternative to our Eddie cluster.

I am wanting to get an idea of runtime and thru-put, but should begin by checking if 4.5 is running on HECToR?! (If not, will it?) In HadCM3 and HadRM3 forms?

If so may I ask:

  • Do you have a recommended maximum length of a job run on HECToR?
  • Do you have any feel for runtime/model year and an optimal number of processors?
  • Are results bit comparing when different number of cores are used in different runs?

maybe this is a question for HECToR support, but:

  • Do you know if policy allows more than one concurrent run for a user at a time?

Many thanks!
Regards
Mike

Hello Mike,

HADCM3 is certainly running on HECToR and from our simple tests yes it does bit compare on different numbers of cores. I am not certain that anyone is running HADRM3 on HECToR at the moment but it should be simple to set up.

The maxium length of jobs is determined by the queue straucture on HECToR so you need to use the command
qstat -queue
to see what queues are avaialable

HADCM3 performance depends on your experiment setup but in general you should be able to achieve 10-20 model years per day on 32 cores.

You can have up to 4 jobs running at any one time according to the HECToR poilcy as described here
