CDT training question

my colleague Ed Mitchard is completing a CDT bid for the "Earth Observation: Data for Earth systems" call. NCAS are part of the consortium. As part of this we want to include some training in Earth System/climate modelling with a strong sense of learning by doing.

My idea is to give the students a pre-configured configuration of HADGEM-3-GAX which only needs small changes. Get them to run it and analyse simulated satellite diurnal cycle (or similar).

Some questions then follow:
1) Would someone from NCAS-CMS be prepared to come to Edinburgh to run a day of UM introduction or provide material. Aim is not to get them UM ready but give them a sense of what it does. Alternatively, could we have access to your training material?

2) How would getting monsoon/archer replacement accounts work for a 10 student cohort?

3) Any other gotcha's I should be aware of?

We already have training accounts on ARCHER, so satisfying (2) is easy.

We have standard HadGEM-3 suites on ARCHER and post processing facilities - I am not sure exactly what would be needed to do the proposed analysis, but cf-python and cf-view are available (iris too).

We are not sure what you mean by Aim is not to get them UM ready but give them a sense of what it does. Our training material is designed to get users running on HPC, but specifically does not address what the UM does (scientifically).

Someone from CMS will be happy to go to Edinburgh to deliver a day's training, alternatively, we are happy for to use our training material (I think the former would be better.)

There will be users of our training accounts for dates in Sept, Nov or Dec, and Jan, so to use them, we'd need to coordinate. I there's a date clash, ARCHER can provide more through their training resource (not under our control) but access to n02 will be required.

There's not much time left on ARCHER - it disappears Feb 2020; when would you plan on running a course?

We will have similar training facilities on ARCHER2, but may not be training-ready until summer 2020.

Dear Grenville,

thanks a lot. We can't start before September 2020 and probably not till 2021. So timescales seem good. Co-ordination would be possible. At this point I just need a short sentence. You OK with something like "NCAS-CMS will provide some UM and HPC orientation".

I'm happy with that.
