3 hourly accumulation in time profile

UM Version: 10.9

Dear CMS team,

I have an issue with outputting some diagnostics every 3 hours as 3-hourly accumulations (adding the values of these diagnostics over a period of 3 hours and outputting it). Suite id is u-bn032 in Archer. The time profile for 3-hourly accumulation in the suite is called 'tacc3hr_e8a6cc17'. The diagnostics outputs which used this time profile are there in /nerc/n02/n02/amenon/u-bn032/field.pp/20180810T0000Z_INCOMPASS_km10_ga6_pt000.pp

In those pp files, the diagnostics are outputted only every 6 hours rather than 3 hours. I am not able to figure out what has gone wrong here. Could you please have a look at the above mentioned time profile in the suite and let me know what might have gone wrong. Many thanks.

The data is correct - metadata in the file headers is not sufficient for xconv or cf python to understand how to interpret the data properly; the UM has flagged accumulations as time-means.

You'll see that in 20180806T0000Z_INCOMPASS_km10_ga6_pt000.pp for example, that the accumulation fields which you'd expect to be output at 3 and 6 hrs are output as separate fields (there are 2 of each).

It's odd that this has not caused a problem before. Have you never output accumulations 'til now?

cf python (or IRIS maybe) can easily fix the problem.

(Using the .pp suffix for a fields file is a bit confusing - I'd recommend not adding it until you really have a .pp file)

Thanks Grenville.

I didn't notice there are two of each field. I have done 6 hourly accumulations earlier. It worked fine as I was supposed to have only one output in each file as each of my output files had data for 6 hours. I did a 3-hourly accumulation for the first time and I created that time profile myself, referring to the 6-hourly one. So I thought I might have made some mistake.

I can access it with IRIS.

We can close this ticket now.
