connection to jasmin

Reported by: awright Owned by: pmcguire

Hello Patrick,

I try to connect to JASMIN through eduroam as but I get this message:
'ssh_exchange_identification: read: Connection reset by peer
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host'

I looked up the problem on JASMIN website here:
where, under the heading 'Check IP address resolves to network domain (all users)', it says to check this:

which I did and got this response:
External IP address:
Reverse DNS lookup failed

Would you know what the problem can be and how to solve it?

All the best,

Hi Azin:
I have had similar problems in the past, when I was on eduroam WIFI on the University of Reading campus.

The solution was to contact (IT) (email = it at, telling them about the problem, and maybe they would put that IP address on a reverse-DNS list of some sort.

Are you actually on eduroam WIFI? Or are you actually on the VPN provided by the University of Reading?

I haven't had these problems when I was on the VPN, as far as I remember.
Have you tried to use the VPN while you're on eduroam WIFI?
Then, your computer will be considered to be part of the University of Reading network, and you shouldn't have reverse DNS problems.

Are you on eduroam WIFI hosted by some other institution besides the University of Reading?
If the eduroam WIFI is hosted by someone else besides the University of Reading, then you should probably contact the tech support for the other institution, to fix this.
