Setting up PUMA for UMUI

I am a first time PUMA/ARCHER and UM user and am trying to setup my environments. At the moment I will be using the UMUI.

I have followed the instructions on:

and I believe that I have correctly setup the ssh forwarding between PUMA and ARCHER.

However when I have tried to open the UMUI I get the following error:

Application initialization failed: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable
Error in startup script: invalid command name "option"
    while executing

I have been unable to find information on how to setup the $DISPLAY variable.

If there is anything else I have missed to set up my PUMA and ARCHER environments help with that would also be very much appreciated.

Hi Sally,

Make sure you login to PUMA with ssh -Y ..... this should fix your display issues.

What version of the UM are you going to be using?
Not many of the UM UMUI versions will be ported to ARCHER2.

Hi Ros,

Oh yes, of course. That has sorted it, however when I open the UMUI it not displaying correctly. I've attached an image. Do you know how to resolve this?

Also if you know where there is basic tutorial on using the UMUI that would be very helpful.

I will be basing the experiments on another person's so wanted to change as little as possible. Do you know what versions of the UMUI will be available on ARCHER 2 or how I can find this information?

Hi Sally,

You will need to configure the fonts for your system. A starting point is here: http://cms.ncas.ac.uk/wiki/UmuiCustomising#ChangingFontsintheNavigationSystem

You could also try copying my ~ros/.umui_appearance file.

There's some basic information on running a UMUI job here: http://cms.ncas.ac.uk/wiki/UM/RunningUMOnArcher

I can also try and find our old UMUI training document, however it was last run in 2016 so I can't guarantee that the jobs in it will still work but it should help with the navigation, etc. We no longer provide training courses in the UMUI as it has been replaced by the Rose/Cylc system and everyone is being encouraged to move to the newer versions.

At the moment it's likely vn8.4 will be ported to ARCHER and if absolutely necessary vn7.3.
