HadRM3 reading multiple LBC files

Reported by: iamack Owned by: lois
Component: UM Model Keywords: HadRM3
Cc: Platform:
UM Version: 4.5

Description

I'm planning to do a multi-decadal HadCM3 run ouputting lateral boundary conditions for a subsequent HadRM3 regional model run. The lbc files are quite large (4GB/year) and there is an option within the umui to have them periodically re-initialised to restrict individual files to a manageable size. However, there doesn't seem to be a corresponding option to tell the regional model to read the sequence of lbc files. Is there any way to do this other than running HadRM3 in multi-instalments specifying a different lbc file (and start dump) for each instalment?

Hello Ian,

You are right, there is an option to re-initialise output lbc files in the UMUI however as there is only the option of reading in lbcs from 1 file (in version 4.5 but 2 in later versions). So either you run HadRM3 as separate jobs or you are going to have to merge these lbcs at some point. You will have to use the Met Office tool mergeum for this and although Jeff Cole thinks this works for UM vn 4.5 we have not really tested it. If you decide to use this option it would be a good idea if you tested the mechanism before you ran your multidecadal run.

Hi Lois,

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of mergeum so that might be useful.
