Generating a time varying vegetation cover ancillary

Description

Hello,
I am trying to generate a ancillary for time dependent vegetation cover.

The dataset I intend to use is different from the standard, Wilson Henderson-Sellers data set and ideally I want more vegetation types than just the usual primary and secondary vegetation types in each grid square.

Is there any existing tools which could help achieve this or am I going to have to make modifications to the central ancillaries program (CAP)? If this is the case where can I get a copy of the CAP source code?

Thanks,
Andrew

It's clear that the CAP can not currently produce what you require, however, what is less clear is how to proceed; the CAP has not been written for general use, so adding extra vegetation types could be a considerable undertaking; porting the code to work on your local machine could also take some doing; but perhaps most significantly, we are not able to provide any source data. The CAP's role is primarily in regridding data rather than directly creating it.

Hi Grenville. Thanks for your reply.

To clarify the situation, I already have a vegetation cover dataset (Pongratz et al 2008) and would like to generate an ancillary file for this. I have read the UM documentation paper no. 70 (specification of ancillary fields), which I believe is describing what the CAP is doing, and it would seem that it would be possible, with a small alteration to the CAP, for me to modify it to accept the new dataset, that I want in place of the usual WHS dataset. Do you think this would be possible? What is the source data which you are unable to supply.

To conclude I would very be grateful if you could provide me with the source code so I can get a better idea what it is doing, or any other documentation which you think could be relevant.

Thanks,
Andrew

I am collecting the code and scripts ready for sending to you. Please bear in mind your responsibilities under the Met Office licence agreement especially given that the code was never intended for general release.
