UM new SPARC ozone ancillaries

Hi Ros,

I want to assess differences in tropospheric Antarctic meteorology
(u,v,T) between 2 runs that differ by strat ozone; pre-industrial and

I plan to run UM v7.x for ~6 years. I know there isn't a pre-industrial
counterpart for Rosenlof but Steven Hardiman from the Met Office
mentioned that the 'new SPARC' climatology is very similar
and therefore the new SPARC pre- and post-industrial ancillaries maybe my best bet.

Do you have a v7.x HadGEM2 (or 3) L60 job that is setup to use the new SPARC
climatologies (as used/produced by Scott Osprey) ?

As I understand it, vn7.3 HadGEM3 is tuned to use Rosenlof, and as the new SPARC
climatology is so similar, a vn7.3 L60 HadGEM3 job may do the trick!

I did try to run the 'old SPARC' climatologies at v7.1 but the
pre-ind run became unstable after a few months…. and after learning about
how different the 'old SPARC' and new SPARC (and Rosenlof) ancils are, I thought it
best to use the newest and best!

Many thanks,

Hi Scott,

Unfortunately I don't have any vn7.x HadGEM3 L60 jobs. The only HadGEM3 jobs I have are L85.

Hello Scott,

This is difficult for us to answer as we are not directly involved in either activity (creating the new SPARC climatologies or the L60 jobs). In general we know about Met Office standard jobs and can usually find input files for them but what you are asking for is not really 'standard'.
I hope that Scott Osprey or Neil Bouchard (Met Office) or Steve Hardiman can find what we you need. We are happy to help if you encounter problems running these jobs on HECToR.

Hi Lois,

Thanks for your reply. I've been in contact with Scott Osprey, Steve Hardiman and Luke Abraham about this. I'm currently trying to get some fortran code which Luke developed (which regrids ancillaries outside the UM; i.e. L60 —> L85) to work on Hector. Once I have produced these regrided ancillaries I should be able to run using the standard N96L85 vn7.3 HadGEM3 setup.

I have now regridded my ancillaries (L60—>L85) using some code made by Luke. The version he sent to the CMS team before didn't run on Hector so you may take the newer version:

Please could you point me to a HadGEM3-A N96L85 vn7.3 basis job?

Many thanks,
