Description
Hi,
Id like to request start dumps for 3rd March 2010 and for 4th December 2005 please. Im guessing the latter will be ECMWF operational analysis, whereas for the former there will be UM data available?
Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy,
You have almost perfectly delimited the Met Office database here. The 4/12/2005 data is (just) available from the Met Office; the 3/Mar/2010 is too recent, and not yet available on 19/Apr/2010.
So I have obtained this year's data from ECMWF. These are operational dumps and are at a quarter degree resolution.
Both data sets are in /work/n02/n02/wmcginty/data_xfer. Please copy them to your own workspace as soon as you can.
Regards,
Willie

Hi Willie,
Thanks for this, but I cant seem to find the folder. Was I too late? Apologies if so, I am available for the rest of the afternoon to copy them across.
Cheers, Andy

Willie,
Sorry, I was looking in home rather than work folder, found them now. Regarding the 04/12/05 start dumps, there are files '20051204_qwqu06.T+3' and '20051204_qwqu06.T+6'. I presume these are at 3z and 6z? Is there not one for midday?
Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy,
The qwqu06 means it is a global update run at 06Z. Thus these dumps are at 0900 and 1200.

Willie

Willie,
Is the ECMWF dump you gave me for the 03.03.2010 case raw unprocessed T1279 data, or has it been processed in some way (perhaps altering the fields)?
Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy,
You should be able to read them in xconv. If you want to use them in the UM you need to reconfigure them using one of the standard umui jobs, xdkea or xdkeb.

Willie

Hi Willie,
I was actually thinking about using the files to initiate WRF… if this is allowed? I was just wandering if the data had been manipulated in any way between the ECMWF archive and the files you uploaded for me.
Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy,
WRF can take GRIB edition 1 and edition 2 files as input. I haven't done any special processing other than extract them from the data base and assembling the fields. I think I've only used netCDf as the input to WRF so I have not explored this myself. Ralph Burton at Leeds has more experience in WRF and GRIB.

Willie

- Resolution set to fixed

Also, a question regarding the ECMWF start dumps you provide.. are they operational analyses, or ERA re-analyses? What resolution are they at?
Thanks, Andy
