Problem with ancillary file

Reported by: cbirch Owned by: lois

UM Version: 6.1

Description

I am trying to re-run a job (xfbvb), which I copied from another user (gdevine (xdqdb)) and should be set up to run properly, so this is probably something trivial and I apologise for that.

I copied the job over and changed the general details and submitted. It complied but didn't run (xfbvb000.xfbvb.d10173.t104903.leave), with the error:

ERROR!!! in reconfiguration in routine Setup_LSM_Out
Error Code:- 1
Error Message:- Error Opening Land/Sea? Mask Ancillary
Error generated from processor 0

I assumed that this was because the job could not find the Land/Sea? Mask Ancillary file due to the line:

OPEN: Ignored Request to Open File /work/n02/n02/cbirch/ancils/Ancil_12/qrparm.mask for Reading

(This file did not exist at this time).

I then copied all the files in /work/n02/n02/gdevine/ancils/Ancil_12 to /work/n02/n02/cbirch/ancils/Ancil_12 and resubmitted. I now have segmentation faults (xfbvb000.xfbvb.d10174.t085740.leave) and I'm not sure what else to try.

Thanks,
Cathryn

Hello Cathryn,

can you change the file permission on the directory and the .leave file so that we can see the output file? Use the command
chmod g+rx <directory/file>
If you are not sure then can you attach the .leave file to this query.

Did the first run in the series xfbva run ok and produce the lateral boundary conditions you need to run your limited area job xfbvb or are you using Gerry's lateral boundary conditions?

Hi Lois,

I've changed the file permissions for the .leave files.

I haven't tried to run xfbva - I intended to use Gerry's boundary conditions. That is maybe another error in the job set-up. (Model selection → Atmosphere → Ancillary and input files → other ancillary files and lateral boundary conditions → lateral boundary conditions) points to $DEVTDIR/xdqda. Does that still point to xdqda in Gerry's directory? Can you explain to me what $DEVTDIR (and $UM_ANCIL) actually points to?

Thanks for your help,
Cathryn

Hello Cathryn

I still don't have permission to see your .leave file, you need to make sure that you have changed permissions on all the directories in the path of this file.

If you look at the setvars file that you run from your .profile file it should be for UM vn 6.1 that you are using
/work/n02/n02/hum/vn6.1/pathscale/scripts/.umsetvars_6.1
In here $DEVTDIR is defined as the same as $WORKDIR, in your case
/work/n02/n02/cbirch
It dates back to when jobs were run on HPCx which defined its work space with $DEVTDIR and now on HECToR they use $WORKDIR. What it means is that Gerry's HPCx jobs should run ok with the changes you have made so it would be useful to see the .leave file.

Hi,

I (think) I've changed the permissions now. If not, they're also attached.

Thanks Cathryn I can see what is happening now and it is the problem that the model can't find the boundary conditions.

OPEN: File /work/n02/n02/cbirch/xdqda/xdqda.alabcou1 to be Opened on Unit 125 does not Ex\
ist
OPEN: WARNING: FILE NOT FOUND
OPEN: Ignored Request to Open File /work/n02/n02/cbirch/xdqda/xdqda.alabcou1 for Reading

So you need to copy Gerry's boundary condition file xdqda.alabcou1
to some directory say /work/n02/n02/cbirch/xfbva which you might have to make

and change the UMUI here
atmosphere → other ancillary files → lateral boundary conditions
to specify the directory as $DEVTDIR/xfbva

This hopefully will now work.
