Unable to log-in to PUMA from desktop machine

Reported by: luke Owned by: ros
Component: PUMA Keywords: ssh

UM Version:

Description

I'm no longer able to connect to PUMA from my desktop here: atm-earth.ch.cam.ac.uk - IP address should be 131.111.112.175, but possibly broadcasting 131.111.112.255.

I've been working to set-up the UM to compile on my desktop machine here, and to do this I had to set up passwordless ssh from my machine. I did this successfully, but there was a problem with usernames when running fcm extract (I'm nla27 here, but luke on PUMA - but the fcm extract was trying to connect to nla27@puma). This happened several times. I now can't seem to ssh to PUMA from my machine atm-earth.ch.cam.ac.uk. I have also removed the passwordless ssh setup at both ends.

Debugging output:

  [11:17:27 nla27@atm-earth ~]$ ssh -vvv luke@puma.nerc.ac.uk
  OpenSSH_5.1p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8h 28 May 2008

  debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0
  debug1: Connecting to puma.nerc.ac.uk [134.225.0.17] port 22.
  debug1: Connection established.
  debug1: identity file /home/nla27/.ssh/id_rsa type -1
  debug1: identity file /home/nla27/.ssh/id_dsa type -1

Hi Luke,

Apologies for the slow response, I was away yesterday. You should now be able to log in to PUMA again.

I'm a little confused as to how you are trying to compile the UM on your local machine. In particular why fcm was trying to connect from your local machine to PUMA?

I'll give it a try out here and get back to you.

Cheers,
Ros.

Hi Ros,

Thanks for fixing things! I'm being a Guinea-Pig for Rupert. I talked with him about the possibility of doing this at the NCAS meeting, since a few people in Cambridge would find it useful. He set up a web-page here, and I've been following his instructions as to how he does it. I have my own version of fcm running here, and when I run fcm extract, it takes the files from PUMA.

Thanks,
