Modifying raindrop size distribution in UM 6.1

Description

Hi NCAS, I've been trying to modify the size distribution of raindrops in the UM so that there are more large drops than in the standard setup.

I've got the Large-Scale Precipitation documentation paper no.26 (version 4.5), and I've tried to change the parameter X1R in the distribution (given by P26.63 on page 5.2) from 8e6 to 8e5. The mod that I've written is /eebaw/modsets/microphysics/mcr601_drop_size_distribution.mh and the job is xeguh

The model seemed to compile and run ok, but when I checked the largescale rainfall rate against that of the standard run (xdzma), the fields are identical in both cases.

I assume that I've probably gone wrong somewhere in writing the mod?

Thanks very much,
Bethan.

Hi Bethan,

The modset looks OK and there has been no complaint in the leave file. It may be worth printing out the value of X1R just to make sure the one you changed is the one being used. Another thing to do is to use a more extreme value.

For reference the instructions on how to use modsets are in documentation paper X2.

Regards,

Willie
