Errors in Reconfiguration Stage

Reported by: SimonDriscoll Owned by: um_support
Component: UM Model Keywords:
Cc: Platform:
UM Version: 6.6.3

with regards to this ticket I was still wondering about

"I believe we can rule out the warning on volcanic forcing as a possible error, it seems

"UM ERROR (Model aborting) :

Routine generating error: Bi_linear_h Error code: 10 Error message:

over-writing due to dim_e_out size"

and possible changes involving tr_vars (they could also be related) may be a problem.

Do you know if the apparent changes to tr_vars could be causing the model to abort with such an error?"

I'm looking into the merging changes, however, I've been advised that these may not be so much a problem (I'm looking into them though). If it is known what causes this "Bi_linear_h" error, and say what file, then perhaps I could isolate the problem. Currently I'm unsure about what may give such errors. Do you know of anything that may cause such errors? As I mentioned I have seen similar problems in this ticket but have no reason to suspect it may the land sea mask that is causing the problem.

Hi Simon,

For this particular error, there are a large number of causes so focussing on the error is not helpful. In general UM errors can be divided into a number of causes,

  • confusion over the setup
  • bad initial data
  • errors in code/modelling

We have already eliminated the first two issues. As I have said, you need to establish, when HECToR is running properly, the revision of the Improved_Volc branch that works. There are three critical revisions,

  • 6395 - creation
  • 6932 - merged
  • 7917 - current

and we have established that the last doesn't work. So I would recommend testing the first two. Just copy the job, change the revision number of the branch in FCM Config > FCM Config Optional Mods and run them.

As regards tr_vars, I have only very briefly examined the changes and suggested areas where I was suspicious. I am not claiming that these are wrong. But you need to be confident that they are right.
