Startdump request

Reported by: oma Owned by: um_support

Description

Hi Willie,

We require startdumps for the 7th December 2011. In this case it would be better to have both ECMWF and MO to be sure that we can go forward with research quickly. Do you think that's possible? I hope so.

Thanks,

Oscar

Hi Oscar,

The ECMWF files are now available on HECToR in /work/n02/n02/wmcginty/data_xfer. Please copy them to your own workspace.

I am not able to get the MO files until Thursday 14th when I hope to be in next. If it is urgent you could ask Simon Wilson to get them for you.

Regards,

WIllie

Hi Willie and Simon,

Thanks for the data. Unfortunately it seems there is an error in the files and I can only read 1-D fields (skin temp, surface pressure, land-sea mask, geopotential) but not 3-D fields (temp, specific humidity, U vel and V vel). Would it be possible to get them again?

Thanks,

Oscar

Hi Oscar,

I checked 20071207_00.grib in xconv and it seems OK. How are you reading the file and what error messages are you getting?

Regards,

WIllie

Hi Willie,

I tried to run the reconfiguration only step to create a startdump and this is what the UM said.
The job is xgubz for your reference.

/work/n02/n02/oma/tmp/tmp.hector-xe6-14.5265/modscr_xgubz/qsexecute: Executing dump reconfiguration program /work/n02/n02/oma/xgubz/reconf.exe

 *****************************************************************************
ERROR!!! in reconfiguration in routine Rcf_Grib_Read_Data
 Error Code:- 50
Error Message:- Error 3 returned by DECODE
 Error generated from processor 0
 *****************************************************************************

If I try opening the file in XConv in Hector and this is the error I get

file /esfs1/n02/n02/oma/d_start/20111207_00.grib is a GRIB file
Error reading file /esfs1/n02/n02/oma/d_start/20111207_00.grib in xread
GRIBEX: Grib Edition not catered for.
 GRIBEX: Return code = 413
Grid description section not included, field omitted

Thanks,

Oscar

Hi Oscar,

This is due to the ECMWF data upgrade that has recently taken place. I used jeff's latest xconv, ~jwc/bin/xconv1.92, to read it.

The upshot is that the standard ECMWF reconfiguration jobs won't work. The Met Office have upgraded their latest models to handle the new format, so if a UM7.6 or 7.8 N320 job can be found, you should use that. I will try to find one in the mean time.

Willie

Hi Willie,

Any luck with this? I've been trying to find a suitable job with no success. It would be great if we could have this running soon as the case got a lot of attention from the research community and the media last week.

Thanks,

Oscar

Hi Oscar,

Not yet. My plan at the moment is to take Ros' job vn8.0 - N48 - xglhe and extend it to N320. It then needs to be linked with the GRIB edition 2 API downloaded from ECMWF. This might take about a week of effort.

Regards,

Willie

Hi Oscar,
Your Met Office data is now on HECToR in /work/n02/n02/wmcginty/data_xfer. Please copy it to your own workspace as soon as possible.

Willie
