Cannot find ISCCP simulator

Reported by: dh023729 Owned by: um_support
Component: UM Model Keywords: ISCCP simulator
Cc: Platform:
UM Version: 6.6.3

Description

Hi,

I'm running HadGEM2-ES v6.6.3. And trying to include diagnoses output from ISCCP simulator, i.e. "2 270 ISCCP CLOUD 0.3 ⇐ tau", and so on.

However, there is error, which is
"

ISCCP - diagnostics not available externally
Either switch off the ISCCP diags in STASH
or contact the code author for details
"

I've checked that the ISCCP simulator has been turned on in my model setup (in LW→Cloud), so this error may indicate that the ISCCP simulator code is not included in the model I used.

As far as I know, the ISCCP simulator is free, though it is not allow to distributed with UM. Is there any copy of UM v6.6.3 on PUMA that alreay had the ISCCP simulator I can use?

Thank you very much,
Liang

Hi Liang,

I've not used the simulator myself. You can find more information at http://cfmip.metoffice.com/ISCCP.html. As far as I can tell you are expected to run the UM first and then run the simulator on the output.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Willie

Hi,

I'm afraid it's a little more complicated than that. The simulator has been integrated into
6.6.3 but the Met Office doesn't allow outside collaborators to produce any ISCPP model
output due to licensing issues. The version of 6.6.3 we have on puma doesn't have the ISCCP
code installed in the trunk.

Simon.

Thanks, Simon and Willie.

I'm wondering can we put it back in, as long as we meet all the requirements of redistribution and use. Because, the code of isccp simulator is open sourced.

And, is any help I can gain from ncas modelling group?

Thanks,
Liang
