The "Forecasting Air-Sea Coupled Interactions in Numerical weather prediction for Atmospheric Tropical Extremes" project aims to understand and improve predictions of tropical cyclones and related extremes in the West Pacific, to safeguard lives and livelihoods in the Philippines. This is a 2 year Met Office Newton Fund project .

CMS has 2 months FTE funded under this project.

CMS will contribute in the following areas:

  • Building the mixed-layer ocean (KPP) with FCM
  • Building example Rose suites capable of running coupled atmosphere — ocean-mixed-layer configuration of the UM, in global and regional configurations to be delivered to the Met Office as part of the project.

July 2017

  • Taken coupled hindcast suite u-am234 and got it running on NEXCS.
  • Run 201612210000Z case study
  • Add fcm_make_kpp app and modified KPP source code to build under FCM.
  • Stripped out the NEMO/CICE ocean model and replaced it with KPP app.
