    55== UM Introduction Course ==  
    7 NCAS-CMS organises 3-day workshops to introduce new Unified Model users to the UM infrastructure for UK researchers. The course covers setting up and running a job, configurations, software management system, file formats, and utilities. Users will be guided through a series of practical exercises that cover the range of typical activities, including debugging common problems. These course are usually run twice a year.      7NCAS-CMS organises 3-day workshops that introduce the UM infrastructure for UK researchers, to help new users past the initial steep learning curve usually involved with UM modelling. 
     9These course are usually run twice a year. The next course will be held on 13-15 December at the University of Reading. Please ContactUs for details on how to apply.  
     11The course includes a series of short lectures covering a variety of topics including: 
     13* An overview of the UM modelling system 
     14* Running UM suites 
     15* Using the Rose/cylc application & workflow management system 
     16* Version control with FCM 
     17* UM data files 
     18* Tools & utilities for working with UM files. 
     20Users are guided through a significant practical component, which involves setting up and running an experiment on ARCHER, as well as typical activities, such as debugging common problems. 
     22By the end of the course users should feel comfortable running standard UM configurations, and making basic suite changes. In particular users will learn how to: 
     24* Set up their environment in order to run the UM. 
     25* Run a basic suite; and a more complex global climate (GA7) suite. 
     26* Work with Rose/cylc tools: Rosie for suite discovery, Rose suite editor, cylc GUI for managing running suite, and Rose-bush for viewing log files. 
     27* Make typical suite changes such as the run length, input files, output diagnostics, and scientific settings. 
     28* Diagnose and overcome common errors. 
     29* Find output data and log files. 
     30* Analyse UM data files using common tools.
